RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Richmond police and prosecutors now investigating an incident where a 4-year-old boy was left on a city school bus for two hours in summer heat.
Nyhiem Butler is doing just fine after being left on a school bus Tuesday morning. Now safe at home, Nyhiem’s mother explained how this situation happened in the first place.
“He has really bad asthma and he has autism so he can’t say, ‘Hey, I’m on the bus. You forgot me,'” said his mother, Tiara Butler.
Her son’s condition, however, is not enough explanation for her as to why her son was left on the bus for more than two hours. Nyhiem boarded the bus around 8:30 in the morning on his way to summer school but wasn’t found until after 10:30. Now she’s demanding answers.
“I want to know why wasn’t they automatically arrested because if it was me and I left him in the car I would be in jail,” said Butler.
In this situation, school officials tell us the driver of the bus was a substitute and did not follow proper protocol when it came to checking the bus at the end of the route. The transportation director for Richmond Public Schools is taking this matter seriously.
“There’s swift action that being taken as we speak so this problem actually should not have happened so since it did the procedures were followed and the people are being dealt with as we speak,” said Transportation Director, Vincent Ashley.
“Something needs to be done as far as charges,” said Butler. “They should not just be suspended or fired. They need to be charged.”
The mother is thankful that she was quickly notified about the situation by her son’s regular bus driver. If possible she plans on pressing charges and is looking for a full explanation as to how this could have happened to begin with.
