Petersburg Officials Declare Local Emergency
In anticipation of the potential impacts of Hurricane Irene, City Manager William E. Johnson, III has declared a Local Emergency for the City of Petersburg. This will allow the City to fully implement its Emergency Operations Plan. Petersburg’s Emergency Operations Center will open at 9:00am on Saturday morning at the Fire Administration Building on Union Street next to City Hall. The emergency operations number for citizen assistance is (804) 733-2328. For medical or police emergencies, citizens should call 911. If power is lost, citizens should call Dominion Virginia Power at
1-888-667-3000. If citizens see down power lines or fallen trees, they should immediately report the location to emergency operations at (804) 733-2328.
The emergency shelter is not scheduled to open at this time, but emergency personnel will track demand to determine if a public shelter is needed.
Citizens should prepare for the storm now. City officials are asking citizens to:
stay off the streets during the storm, check on neighbors and relatives and stay informed through media outlets, the City website (www.petersburg-va.org) and the city Facebook page. For additional Hurricane Preparedness information, go to www.ReadyVirginia.gov.
All Petersburg Tourism sites and all city operated swimming pools will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.
