WBA Reclassifies Gervonta Davis as “Champion in Recess”

Last week, an arrest warrant was issued for Gervonta Davis in Miami Gardens, FL, after a woman accused him of assault and holding her against her will.
Now, per Fight News, the WBA has effectively stripped Davis of his active lightweight title, moving him to “Champion in Recess” due to ongoing legal issues and inactivity. The designation is typically used when a champion cannot defend—because of injury, inactivity, or other circumstances.
While he’s no longer the active titleholder, the status preserves eligibility for Davis to compete for the crown upon his return, pending resolution of his situation. The WBA is expected to address the active title picture separately, which could include ordering a bout for the vacant or recognized championship.
Davis and his team have not issued a new statement responding to the reclassification.
Title sidelined, not erased: as “Champion in Recess,” Davis can still fight his way back—if and when he returns.
