In the midst of sorting through intangible beauty standards, body shaming, and celebrity, Leslie Jones revealed a barrage of racist, sexist tweets she received on Monday evening.

The tweets launched a horrific start to what should have been a life changing week after the weekend release of her film Ghostbusters.

Messages were singed with hate, comparing her to Harambe the gorilla and sexualizing parts of her body.

To make matters worse, a homophobic rant attributed to her Twitter handle circulated on the internet, one that Jones repeatedly denied any association with. The aftermath caused the comedic star to question Twitter’s support account and their commitment to quell cyber-bullying.

Soon after her heartbroken tweet, fans and celebrities used the hashtag #LoveForLeslieJ, embedded with encouraging messages of acceptance.

Jones and her co-stars have faced fierce criticism since the women-led Ghostbusters revival was announced last year, but this recent episode reveals Twitter must examine their policies in regards to making social media a safe place – one that allows valid criticism, but shuts out bigotry and hate.
