Ava DuVernay had a whirlwind 2014 after her award-winning MLK biopic Selma was released, and now Marvel Studios is reportedly eyeing her for an upcoming “diverse” superhero project, according to TheWrap.

Speculation’s already running wild as to whether or not DuVernay will take the director’s chair on the upcoming Black Panther or Captain Marvel movies. Either way, the mutual interest that both parties have shown is almost certain to work out in the favor of both camps, at the end of it all.

This news is coming on the heels of Avengers: Age Of Ultron dominating the global box office and Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter trashing the box office performance of women-led superhero movies (sigh). It’s especially interesting since a Marvel Studios project has yet to be headed by a female director. DuVernay would be both the first woman and first African-American to direct a movie in the highly profitable universe.

If she signs onto the MCU, we can’t wait to see what she’s got in store. Marvel may be known as one of the most producer-driven movie studios on the planet, but DuVernay’s vision is sharp enough to pierce through all of that.
