Brother 2 Brother Kicks Off Year with Mentoring Month Event

Richmond, VA— January is National Mentoring Month and we are looking for a few good men.  The Brother 2 Brother Mentor and Coaching Program will kick off the year with a special mentoring event on January31, 2012 at the East District Family Resource Center.  The evening will consist of a screening and community discussion of the award winning documentary “Men II Boys” (www.whatblackmenthink.com).  This event is open to the community and will serve as an opportunity for Black men to become mentors and young men in middle and high school to sign up for mentoring services—becoming a part of the Brother 2 Brother family.  Attendees will be introduced to Brother 2 Brother by its founders—Sean Young and Lloyd Young—and be informed about the programs and services that Brother 2 Brother has to offer.

This year Brother 2 Brother is partnering with the Black Male Achievement Mentoring Initiative (BMAMI), a national movement to “ensure that Black boys and young Black men are connected to effective mentoring services”.  Brother 2 Brother is spearheading the BMAMI in the City of Richmond.  As of December 19, 2011 Richmond is 1 of 63 cities nationwide to partner with BMAMI.  The BMAMI is a collaborative effort of the Open Society Foundation, Mentoring USA, and National Cares Mentoring Movement with technical support provided by The Black Star Project (www.blackstarproject.org).

Brother 2 Brother, the flagship program of Young Minds Youth and Family Development, was established in 2009.  Brother 2 Brother specializes in the development and training of Black men and boys.  Despite facing difficulty in recruiting ongoing mentors, Brother 2 Brother has been able to provide workshops and conferences for numerous Black men and boys in the Richmond Metro area.
