CHESTERFIELD Co. – A City of Richmond resident is facing several charges after attempting to flee from Virginia State Police. This afternoon, September 6, 2010, at 1:52 p.m., Virginia State Police was conducting a checkpoint near Woods Edge Road and Interstate 95 when a 2000 Lexus approached the checkpoint. The trooper instructed the driver to pull over to the shoulder for a traffic violation.

After directing the driver to the shoulder, the driver fled from the scene in his vehicle. The suspect led state police on approximately a four-mile pursuit on northbound Interstate 95 approaching speeds of 80 miles per hour. The suspect exited onto Route 10 eastbound and crashed a short time later into two state police vehicles near the Intersection of West Hundred Road and Old Stage Road. The suspect then attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended a short time later after resisting arrest. Both troopers and the suspect suffered minor injuries during the scuffle.

The driver, O’Neil A. Gooden, 34, was arrested and transported by ambulance to John Randolph Medical Center. Gooden has been charged for driving on a suspended license, reckless driving, escape from custody without force, possession of marijuana, possession of a concealed weapon and having a television in view of the driver, all misdemeanors. Further felony charges are pending upon Gooden’s release from the hospital.

The two troopers suffered minor injuries and received medical treatment. Both have since been released.
