Southwest Airlines has revised its policy affecting plus-size passengers following months of public discussion, traveler feedback and advocacy efforts.

Under the updated policy, plus-size passengers are no longer required to purchase an additional seat in advance when extra space is needed. Instead, airline agents may provide an additional seat at no extra cost when seating with additional space is available.

The change comes after ongoing conversations surrounding accessibility, customer comfort and equitable travel experiences. Advocates for plus-size travelers have long argued that requiring passengers to purchase an extra seat created financial barriers and placed an unfair burden on individuals based on body size.

Southwest’s updated approach is designed to offer greater flexibility while helping ensure passengers have access to comfortable seating arrangements when available. Travelers who require additional space are encouraged to speak with a customer service agent before boarding to discuss seating options.

The policy update has been welcomed by many travelers and advocacy groups, who view the change as a step toward creating a more inclusive travel experience.

As airlines continue to evaluate customer needs and accessibility concerns, the conversation around passenger comfort, seating accommodations and equitable travel policies remains an important topic across the industry.
