The Steelers confirmed Tomlin’s departure today, one day after a wild-card loss to Houston. It ends the longest active coaching tenure in the NFL and just the third change at head coach for Pittsburgh since 1969.

Hired in 2007, Tomlin won Super Bowl XLIII, reached the postseason 13 times, and captured eight AFC North titles. He compiled 193 regular-season wins, tying franchise legend Chuck Noll for the most in team history.

This year’s exit marked a seventh straight postseason defeat, amplifying criticism despite another winning campaign. Team president Art Rooney II praised Tomlin’s leadership and consistency in a statement.

Pittsburgh now begins a rare coaching search; it will be only the franchise’s fourth head coach since 1969

End of an era in Pittsburgh: a Hall-of-Fame résumé built on stability—now, a fresh start for both sides.
