Residents in parts of Charles City County were placed under a boil water advisory Sunday after E. coli was detected in the local water distribution system. The Charles City County Sheriff’s Office warned that those living along Wayside Road and Kimages Road should not use tap water without boiling it first.

Officials have not released additional details about the contamination but said updates would be shared as soon as they become available. They expect the issue to be resolved within the next few days. In the meantime, the county is offering potable water at the Government Building on Courthouse Road.

Health officials advise residents to bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute, then allow it to cool before using it for drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, or cooking. Bottled water is also considered safe. Water filters are not an acceptable substitute, as they do not remove harmful microorganisms.

State health officials are conducting an assessment to determine the source of the E. coli contamination and will oversee corrective actions to restore water safety.
