RRD: Were Martin’s Jokes About Pam Rooted in Colorism?

Former Dreamville artist Ari Lennox has sparked nationwide conversations with her perspective on jokes made about Tichina Arnold’s character, Pam, on the iconic 1990s sitcom Martin. In a recent interview, she expressed discomfort with how Martin Lawrence’s character, Martin, often targeted Pam’s physical appearance—especially her hair. Lennox suggested the underlying tone of the jokes was rooted in colorism and impacted her perception of Pam growing up as a dark-skinned woman, making it harder to embrace the character’s greatness.
As a Black woman—where society already places so many stereotypes upon me and others like me—watching Martin gave our culture room to embrace and find humor in what society often deems negative. The thought of where the jokes were stemming were never a factor, simply because Martin had jokes for everyone—and Pam always delivered a sharp clapback. To imply those jokes were colorist, couldn’t we also argue that Martin’s character Sheneneh Jenkins played into the “ghetto girl” stereotype?
Martin Lawrence is rarely criticized for his portrayal of Sheneneh. In fact, that character was embraced because she represented the “around-the-way girl” many in the Black community recognized and identified with. In my opinion, that same sentiment should apply to the jokes exchanged with Pam—they were part of the show’s humor and cultural context.
Martin is a staple in the Black community because of its relatability. Every joke hit close to home, we understood it, and we embraced it. The show reflected how we still roast with family, friends and loved ones—jokes rooted in love that sparked genuine laughter.
As you can tell, I disagree with the idea that Martin’s jokes were rooted in colorism—so I’ll definitely be Reporting. But I want to hear your thoughts! The New Rory & Mal Podcast had a great debate on this topic. Check out the clip below and let me know:
