Virginia’s school system ranks as the ninth-best in the nation, according to WalletHub’s 2024 report, a drop from fifth place in 2023. The report evaluated all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on 32 quality and safety measures, including pupil-teacher ratios, dropout rates, and standardized test scores.

Virginia excels in high school graduation rates for low-income students, ranking 13th nationally. While the state’s math scores are strong at 15th, there’s room for improvement in reading, where it ranks 28th. Virginia also performs well in Advanced Placement (AP) exam preparation, ranking tenth.

The state ranks 18th for pupil-teacher ratio, suggesting a good balance between student numbers and teacher availability. Additionally, Virginia is noted for its school safety, with low rates of violence, bullying, and threats, and a high percentage of parents reporting that their children attend safe schools.
