The requirement that schools open after the September holiday, was initiated by Kings Dominion in the 1980s. The law, passed in 1986, served to ensure that several millions dollars were retained over the concluding summer season.

Now, Virginia schools are allowed to open as early as two weeks before the Labor Day holiday and students will be given a four-day holiday weekend.

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, both bills take effect on July 1. Most districts have already created their annual school calendar, but schools could begin using the earlier start dates as soon as next school year.
