Headkrack stopped by the weekly radio show Day 1 Radio to talk all things hip-hop. He recalled his first memories of hip-hop from his beginnings in the Bronx, New York in the 80s, when rap wasn’t nearly as accessible as it is today. He talked about wanting to be Michael Jackson, and when he figured out he wanted to and could actually become a rapper.

He talks about the culture shock of being sent to Texas to live with his grandmother in a less diverse setting, as well as living in a dangerous part of the Bronx and witnessing the impact of the crack/cocaine epidemic in the neighborhood. He says he must hold the record for “almost getting robbed,” and describes how all of that caused him to get really good at writing.

Then, he explained how he got his start on radio in Texas after watching the region’s evolution of hip-hop, which was vastly different (and more challenging) than New York’s. He reminisced about the freedom he and his co-host, Keystone (who is now a part of The Bodega Brovas with him and Traii the 7th) had with playing music and running the radio show that doesn’t exist in radio now.

Headkrack then recalls the way he and Keynote went from doing a radio show together to starting the Bodega Brovas with the third member, Travii. And of course, he opens up about the adjustment of moving from Dallas to Atlanta and being on “The Rickey Smiley Morning Show” after being on his own show.
