Dave Chappelle‘s long-awaited return to TV exceeded all expectations. Eleven years after walking away from his hit sketch series Chappelle Show, the funny man appeared as host on Saturday Night Live and kept the laughs rolling from beginning to end. This episode in particular had a lot on its shoulders, as many Americans are still stunned by the election of Donald Trump.

Chappelle addressed the matter head on in his opening monologue, joking that we all should have seen this coming. “I didn’t know that Donald Trump was going to win the election. I did suspect it. It seemed like Hillary was doing well in the polls and yet — I know the Whites. You guys aren’t as full of surprises as you used to be,” Chappelle said. “But America’s done it. We’ve actually elected an Internet troll as our president.”

He concluded his monologue with a serious message urging us to unite and heal. “In that spirit, I’m wishing Donald Trump luck. And I’m going to give him a chance, and we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too.”

The fun didn’t stop there. Chappelle lent his natural comedic gifts in a few skits. One in particular pokes fun at the dreaded Walking Dead episode where longstanding character Glenn is killed. In it, he resurrects a few beloved characters from Chappelle Show like Clayton Bigsby and Tyrone Biggums.

In a second skit called “Election Night”, Chappelle and surprise guest Chris Rock join their white friends at a pro-Hillary election viewing party. The two comics are amused as their naive white friends slowly come to the realization that America is much more racist than they realized.
