How quickly the years pass by. On Feb. 11, 2012, the world lost “The Voice,” when Whitney Houston died at just 48 years old.

Let’s rewind to 1985, when Whitney was still virtually an unknown, and we were introduced to the budding phenom. In a rare clip, we find a soft-spoken Whitney speaking with the late Joan Rivers on the comedienne’s talk show, after delivering a masterful performance of her hit, “Saving All My Love For You.”

The fresh-faced newbie spoke about her humble beginnings growing up singing gospel music at her church in Newark, N.J. She also discussed being a single girl, and her first major purchases thanks to her newfound fame.
