The woman who accused current NFL player and former Florida State University standout Jameis Winston of rape has settled with the university for $950,000 on Monday. Erica Kinsman says the school’s mishandling of the investigation was the cause of her drawing up legal action, and is one of the largest payouts of its sort ever made.

The settlement also keeps the matter from going to a full-blown trial, thus, Winston and witnesses will not take the stand to testify in the case. Winston, who currently stars as a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has maintained his innocence.

The 2012 incident was explosive news at the time, considering Winston was a darling of the college football world who later won the coveted Heisman Trophy award. Coupled with some of Winston’s public and embarrassing legal episodes such as shoplifting, it was a powder keg moment waiting to happen.

Kinsman will receive $250,000 in settlement monies, while the rest will go to her legal team.

Fox News reports:

The school also vowed to start new programs dedicated to identifying and preventing sexual assault.

“I am happy that FSU has committed to continue making changes in order to ensure a safer environment for all students,” Kinsman said in a statement.

“Although we regret we will never be able to tell our full story in court, it is apparent that a trial many months from now would have left FSU fighting over the past rather than looking toward its very bright future,” the university’s president John Thrasher responded.

Winston and Kinsman have launched lawsuits against one another. Winston has never been charged with a crime and was cleared by the university of any wrongdoing. Winston does not deny that there was a sexual relationship between the two but says it was consensual.
