If Bill Cosby‘s response to sexual assault accusations seems aloof and callous, an account of his much-discussed 2005 deposition that was published Saturday in the New York Times sheds light on the reason why.

The Times reports the deposition was the only batch of documents left unsealed in the suit filed by Andrea Constand, who accused Cosby of drugging and molesting her. Constand met Cosby when she was a basketball manager at Temple University in the early 2000s. Constand’s lawyer, Dolores M. Troiani, asked the disgraced comedian about his interaction with Constand and other women who accused him of sexual assault.

What followed were admissions of using his fame, mentorship, and drugs to have sex with young women. When asked about his intentions with Beth Ferrier, a then-19-year-old model, Cosby says he expressed interest in her father’s cancer diagnosis in order to have sex with her.

Via The Times:

“Did you ask her those questions because you wanted to have sexual contact with her?” Ms. Troiani asked.

“Yes,” Mr. Cosby responded.

Cosby also said that he had sex with Constand in his Pennsylvania home. He said he gave her Benadryl tablets (but Constand believes it was a stronger drug). After the encounter, she left the States to return to her mother’s home in Canada. Cosby says he called her mother to assure her that he wasn’t a “dirty old man.” He also asked Constand to tell her mother that she climaxed in order to prove the sex was consensual.

“Tell your mother about the orgasm. Tell your mother how we talked,” he said he remembered thinking.

After calling Constand a liar, Cosby became defensive at times, confessing to several extramarital affairs, but denied assaulting any of the women. He did admit to getting upset when the women didn’t take his career advice. In an effort to keep them from “embarrassing” him, he used his massive fortune to pay for the women’s education and other needs.

In the case of Ms. Constand, who never sought any funds, Mr. Cosby said he imagined his wife would have known he was helping with her education. But, he said, “My wife would not know it was because Andrea and I had had sex and that Andrea was now very, very upset and that she decided that she would like to go to school.”

He also defended his use of Quaaludes. After filing seven prescriptions for the drug, Cosby said he never took any, but had them on file for women since they were a known party drug at the time.
