With a few simple words, the mother of a concerned Black male college student gave social media users a reprieve from the daily menu of bad news about police shooting or killing African-Americans.
Dr. Nada Owusu, a pediatrician in Danville, Va., posted an image on Facebook of her son, Joseph, standing next to officer Matt Okes, praising the officer for “being a good person waiting with my son” after he got a flat tire driving home from Virginia Tech, reports CBS News.
And the image has garnered over 25,000 shares since it was posted nearly a week ago.
My son had his back tire blown off his car last night on his way home from School. This kind officer approached him didn’t ask if the little Mercedes was stolen but rather got on his knees to replace his tire. When his effort failed he stayed with my son all night till we arrived at 1am with triple A. He provided all the needed protection especially from those tractor trailers till we were done by 2 am and till drove behind us for a while before exiting. Today I salute officer Okes! He is our hero and our “Good Samaritan.”
CBS News says Okes flashed the lights of his cruiser to ensure that truckers and other vehicles on Route 220 South could see Owusu’s vehicle and until AAA and his parents arrived.
The story comes at a time when police across the nation are under intense scrutiny after several high-profile deaths of unarmed Blacks following encounters with officers, including Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Maryland, Walter Scott in North Charleston, South Carolina, Eric Garner in New York City, and Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
Owusu said she wanted to share some good news because,”there’s a lot of good in America and that needs to be heard. Police need our support.”
Thanks Dr. Owusu and Officer Okes for the reprieve from bad news.
