In a fairly predictable turn of events, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Andrew Wiggins will be announced as the NBA’s 2014-15 Rookie of the Year later this week, according to a new report from The Associated press.
At 19-years old, Wiggins is the fourth youngest player ever to win the Rookie of the Year honors. Last year he was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the number one overall pick but was traded to Minnesota in August. By season’s end, Wiggins had little competition for the award considering his increasingly consistent stats: he averaged 16.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, according to ESPN. The guy also played in all 82 games of the season, averaging 39 minutes per game.
Earlier this year, Steve Kerr commented on Wiggins’ chances at the Rookie of the Year award. “I don’t even know who else would be in the conversation (for the award),” Kerr said. “He’s going to be an All-Star. He’s a terrific player, a good talent and it looks like he’s figuring out the NBA game. He’s really going to be a good player.”
As for the three players who won the honors at a younger age? Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and Lebron James.
