When watching the video for Amatus‘ collaborative single “Messin (Jneiro Jarel Remix),” it’s easier to initially be more interested in her gorgeous hair and vibrantly colored dress than the song itself. If you favor a more hearty dosages of bass and melodic instrumentals to support vocals, you might think this remix leaves a lot to be desired at first listen. But Jneiro Jarel‘s take on “Messin” has got a sick beat, although sparsely decorated with ethereal and trippy sounds, while Amatus’ vocals get woven vaguely through each other behind her hypnotic lead.
When you settle into the hip-hop infused track, you find yourself completely carried away by the beat. It bounces you along until you find yourself more supported by a bass that builds to the listener’s satisfaction. The video is simple; just the wind, a field, and the Chicago native herself in the glow of a setting sun. Amatus’ voice, though technically underwhelming, is the perfect thread to weave throughout Jneiro Jarel’s ethereal track.
The original version of “Messin,” the first track on Amatus’ EP (entitled “Broken Compass”), leans more toward Rock & Roll, with a driving drumbeat that leaves you feeling weightless when it cuts out suddenly at its end . Amatus’ sweet voice comes in great contrast to the strength and boldness of her sound, and proves its versatility throughout “Broken Compass”. Upon listening to her EP, it’s no surprise that she’s spent time watching greats like Erykah Badu, Common, and The Roots at work, though her sound is all her own.
