Last-second field goal gives Lions 22-21 win in London

Matt Prater knocked in a 48-yard field goal just moments after missing a 43-yarder to give the Lions a 22-21 win over the Falcons in London. With four seconds left Prater missed the game-winning kick, but it was blown dead before the snap because of a delay of game penalty. He knocked in the next try for the win.

Atlanta led Detroit 21-0 at halftime after Matt Ryan carved up the top-ranked defense in the country for 30 minutes. But coach Jim Caldwell made some key adjustments at the half as the team shut down the Falcons in the second half. The first big score came on 3rd and 25 when Matt Stafford hit Golden Tate for a 59-yard score to shave the lead to 21-10. Stafford overcame some accuracy issues to finish with 325 yards on 24 of 47 passing and two touchdowns. He also threw one interception. Tate came up big for the Lions with Calvin Johnson, Reggie Bush, Brandon Pettigrew, Eric Ebron and Joseph Fauria sidelined with injuries. The first-year Lion caught seven passes for 151 yards and one score. Theo Riddick and Joique Bell carried the rushing load, but gained just 44 combined yards on the ground. Bell did pick up some big gains on the final two drives, and Riddick caught a team-high eight passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Detroit will welcome the Dolphins to the Motor City after the bye week, hoping to stay atop the NFC North Division to start the second half.

Mother of downtown Detroit shooting victim speaks

Detroit police continue to search for a group of men involved in a deadly shootout that happened downtown early Saturday morning. It happened outside the Executive Cigar Bar near Campus Martius, where witnesses said stray bullets hit parked cars. The victim’s mother spoke Sunday night with Local 4 and shared her heartbreak.

Curtis Goodman, 24, went out Friday night for a birthday party, but he never made it home. His family said he rarely went out, but he loved his job at Chrysler and loved playing basketball. A young woman who had been out that night with Curtis called his mother in a panic.

She received a call minutes later that would change her life. She started driving to the Executive Cigar Bar at Cadillac Square and Randolph. Gary waited behind police tape for four hours. Gary said 20 minutes before the bar closed Goodman and his friends got into an altercation with a group of five men. They followed Goodman and his friends out the door and started fighting in the parking lot. As the friends raced to get into the car the group of men opened fire.

Goodman died at the scene. His friends shot at the group of men while another friend lay injured after being hit in the head with a bottle. Gary has a final plea for anyone who may have seen something early Saturday morning. Detroit police told Local 4 on Sunday afternoon someone went into the police station and spoke with investigators. Police would not say if that person was a witness or was involved in the shooting. Police said they are also looking at surveillance video from that night. So far there’s only a vague description of the men involved. One of the men is said to have dreadlocks. Detroit police are asking for witnesses to come forward.
