Never-before-seen video has emerged of President Obama meeting his long-lost half-brother for the first time in nearly 20 years.
The 33-second clip, released Tuesday by “Inside Edition,” shows Mark Obama Ndesandjo, who is the President’s younger half-brother, awkwardly reuniting with then-candidate Obama on a night during the 2008 presidential race. Ndesandjo, who shares a father with Obama, is seen waiting in a room when the President enters.
“How are you? Good to see you,” Obama says as he embraces his sibling, slapping him on the back six times. “How you been, man?”
The reunion, which appeared to take Obama by surprise, happened just before the then-senator was set to debate Hillary Clinton in a Democratic primary debate.
Ndesandjo had just flown in from China, where he lives, to surprise his estranged sibling. “It was amazing,” Ndesandjo told “Inside Edition.” “We just laughed and we hugged each other and we were brothers.” Ndesandjo’s mother, a teacher from Massachusetts, married Barack Obama Sr., in 1964, just months after he divorced the future President’s mother, Ann Dunham.
Obama grew up mostly in Hawaii with his mother, while Ndesandjo grew up in Kenya. According to “Inside Edition,” the half-brothers did not meet for the first time until 1988, when Ndesandjo was 22 years old and Obama showed up unannounced at his home in Kenya. But, the pair eventually lost touch.
