When it comes to independent black film making, AFFRM is leading the charge. Their distribution label ARRAY has recently gotten its hands on one of the biggest films on the independent circuit. AFFRM founder Ava DuVernay ARRAY, through its multi-platform, will be releasing the film “Big Words.”

“Big Words” is a SlamDance Film Festival favorite written and directed by former Entertainment Weekly writer Neil Drumming. The film centers around three former friends who grew up in Brooklyn trying to make it as a rap group. With things not working out the way they planned, the group breaks up. One is a working class man, another is finally living his true life as a gay man, and the other is still longing for the glory days. On the eve of Obama’s historical presidential win, the trio’s paths cross again and they must deal with the unfinished business they left so long ago.

ARRAY’s Managing Director Tilane Jones stated, “Neil has created a poignant study of black masculinity and friendship set against the beauty of hip hop and the community it can foster.  We’re very pleased to work with this exciting new writer/director to make sure ‘BIG WORDS’ finds its audience.”

“I can’t think of a more ideal situation for us than to release BIG WORDS under the AFFRM banner. I’ve long admired Ava DuVernay as both an artist and a champion of independent film. I’m incredibly proud that AFFRM has recognized the potential of this film, and I can’t wait for audiences to see what my wonderful crew and I have accomplished,” Neil Drumming said.
