Sandford, Florida police chief Bill Lee stepped down temporarily on March 22 amid allegations that he didn’t handle the Trayvon Martin case fairly by not arresting George Zimmerman following the shooting on February 26. The state’s commissioner voted 3-2 to reject Lee’s resignation. According to the Associated Press, “the majority blamed the uproar surrounding Martin’s death on outsiders.”

The state commissioner voted on the resignation Monday.  Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett said he will not comment on Lee’s conduct until an investigation is complete. Mayor Triplett told CNN, “I’m not ready to have him come back and run the police department, but I don’t want know if I’m ready for this either.”

Captain Darren Scott will remain the interim chief for now.

George Zimmerman was released from the John E. Polk Correctional facility is Seminole Country earlier Monday on a $150,000 bond. Zimmerman left jail wearing an electronic monitoring device and will reside at an undisclosed location.

Zimmerman has been  charge with second degree murder in the death of 17 year old Trayvon Martin. If found guilty Zimmerman faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
