Twitter is launching a program called Promoted Tweets, the social media platform’s foray into generating advertising revenue. The new program answers one long asked question –how will Twitter make money? — while raising another; how will it affect your Twitter experience?
When Twitter users searches for certain keywords, links to ads purchased by companies participating in Promoted Tweets will appear. There are plans to show advertising tweets relevant to the topics in the Twitter streams of users as well. In example, you and your followers are tweeting it up about your love of lattes; a link to Starbucks pops up.
Users will surely cry foul about “big brother” and once again corporate America invading, and corrupting, yet another social media destination. Considering Twitter’s founders have long alluded to trumping even Google, the real question should be; what took so long?
