Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has signed a couple of bills relating to the child sex abuse scandal in the Catholic church. The bills he signed yesterday require religious officials to report suspected child abuse to law enforcement. However, there is an exemption where clergy members don’t have to report something if confidentiality is required, like if it were learned during confession. The new law applies to suspected child abuse or neglect, and it goes into effect on July 1, 2019.

The Virginia General Assembly will reconvene on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 to take action on Governor Northam’s amendments to the budget bill.
