Actor LaKeith Stanfield came through to “The Rickey Smiley Morning Show” to talk about his new film, “Crown Heights.” The film was based off of the true story of a man named Colin Warner, who explains exactly what happened on the fateful night he was kidnapped off the streets by police for a crime he had nothing to do with. Colin talks about the knowledge that he shares his story with thousands of other wrongfully accused in the justice system in America.”From 18-39 years old, I fought and never give up,” Colin says, and encourages families fighting for people in prison to do the same.

LaKeith talks about marveling at the “strong, willful mindset” Colin Warner maintained in the face of constant scrutiny and negativity as he fought for his freedom. He speaks about the honor of playing a man like this, and reveals all of the different things he did to research in order to play the part, from his initial conversation with Colin, to prison visits and sifting through court documents, and working on his accent.
