After fighting for her life for over 24 hours, 12-year-old Dejah Joyner succumbed to injuries sustained when a stray bullet flew into her Hempstead, Long Island home and struck her down as she stood in her living room, the New York Daily News reports.

Her parents Dameon Joyner and Keisha Miles Joyner have spearheaded community efforts to find their daughter’s killer, along with clergy and local law enforcement.

Alex Cruz, who lives across the street, told the News the gunman took aim at young man who also lived in the building and was entering the home at the time of the attack.

Distraught relatives and loved ones embraced each other outside the Joyner’s home on Sunday after the Nassau County acting District Attorney Madeline Singas denounced the shooting.

“Dejah Joyner’s life was violently cut short before she even had a chance to live it,” she said. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy and we will do everything in our power to make sure that the gunman is brought to justice.
