A highly anticipated showdown is set to take place Saturday August 29th between undefeated star Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz and former three-division world champion Abner Mares in their home state of California.
With Santa Cruz being the undefeated champ, Mares coming with something to prove based on a tough loss and fight outcome predictions split at 50-50, their story is being compared to that of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
Santa Cruz who was victorious on the Mayweather-Pacquiao undercard, looks to make a statement at 126 against Mares. Santa Cruz (30-0-1, 17 KOs) is a former titleholder at 118 and 122 pounds, made his 126-pound debut in May, winning a 10-round unanimous decision over Jose Cayetano in Las Vegas.
Mares (29-1-1, 15 KOs), who won a 10-round unanimous decision over Arturo Santos Reyes in March, is setting his sights on his fourth straight victory since losing his 126-pound title to Jhonny Gonzalez in August 2013. The first round knock out by Gonzalez was his first loss ever. Surprisingly, his now 9-year-old daughter was the one who gave him the best advice, watch below.
