Remember that Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at the University of Oklahoma that got caught singing a racist chant on video? Well, one of the SAE “brothers,” Levi Pettit, has since apologized, claiming he would spend his life fighting racism. What and what? Pettit’s family has also issued an apology and even called their son’s behavior, “disgusting.”

“All the apologies in the world won’t change what I have done, so I will spend the rest of my life trying to be the person who heals and brings people of all races together,” Pettit said in a press conference in Oklahoma City. Pettit met with Black civic leaders and pastors prior to the press conference and delivered a prepared statement. “The people I met with have opened my eyes to things I wasn’t exposed to before this event,” Pettit added during a brief question and answer session, saying he hadn’t understood the hurt his words caused. “I think I knew they were wrong, but I never knew why or how they were wrong.”

He thinks he knew those hateful words were wrong, but he doesn’t know why or how? That’s because referring to a “n*gger hanging from a tree” is so ambiguous that there’s no possible way Pettit could have known that was racist. SMH. Why did they even let him speak?

One thing Pettit wouldn’t say was where he learned the chant or who taught it to him. “I’m not here to talk about where I learned the chant or where it was taught. I’m here to apologize for what I did,” Pettit said. “I’ve learned these words should never be repeated, joked about or used in any form ever again. These are lessons I’m going to carry with my for the rest of my life.” As he should. He should be ashamed of himself…for life.

This apology is just…no. We can’t. Awesomely, SAE closed its doors at the university earlier this month after a firestorm of critics slammed the college and its apparent racism. Pettit was expelled, along with fellow frat brother, Parker Rice. Mostly, we just can’t with the amount of Black civic leaders standing behind Pettit as if they’re supporting him and this lackluster and faux apology. Why Jesus? Why?
