Christopher Jackson is dominating Broadway as he takes on his third leading role of the season with the Holler If Ya Hear Me.

Despite whispers that the Tupac Shakur-inspired musical might close the same week that it opened, the show has survived! That’s great news for Chris, who also starred in Bronx Bombers and After Midnight.

“It’s been a very full year, filled with a lot of expectations and a lot of really fantastic people,” Chris told Playbill.com. “Sure, there have been disappointments, but at every turn, I’ve learned more than I could have wished for. I’m grateful.”

The biggest disappointment for Chris this season had to be when Bronx Bombers shuttered after just one month. He played the role of Derek Jeter in the production, which centered on Yogi Berra.

Chris recalls having a “fantastic” experience with the role and the cast, and he’s not sure why the show didn’t have a more successful run.

“I love baseball with a passion so that’s another one of those things where it wasn’t work going in everyday to put on the pinstripes of New York and have star status with #2 on your back,” he explained.

Boasting a résumé that includes the lead role as Simba in The Lion King, Chris is familiar with being part of bold, new productions. When Disney’s musical first hit Broadway, critics hadn’t seen anything like it before.

The same could be said of Holler If Ya Hear Me, which has gotten a lukewarm reception. The musical has Tupac’s lyrics and poetry laced throughout the production. Chris thinks its “a very important piece of theatre.”

“I could not have imagined it in a million years,” he said, “but I am delighted every time I go to work and am reminded of the fact that, as an artist, I feel like I am able to promote and to help bring to the forefront a forum that’s really important and one that at times have been marginalized as something or the other.”
