Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman costumes have began surfacing across social media and I’ll be honest with you; it never crossed my mind that people would think to tackle this sensitive topic for the ghoulish holiday. Two Florida men, Greg Cimeno (22) and William Filene (25) showed up to Caitlin Cimeno’s Halloween party dressed as Trayvon and Zimmerman.

Greg’s costume consisted of a simple black T-shirt with “Neighborhood Watch” in white lettering, while Filene’s more racist costume included blackface and a hoodie with a bloody bullet wound. When Caitlin posted the photo on her Facebook page, she used the caption, “Happy Halloween from Zimmerman & Trayvon.”

Maybe I’m naive or maybe I have higher hopes for our society than what they actually deserve. Either way, there’s nothing about making a costume out of someone’s murder that is funny. Shocking, yes. But isn’t that what our society has come to glorify? The wound this tragic incident caused an entire race of people to feel has barely healed (if you can even say that it’s healing) and what both Cimenos and Filene did was rip the band-aid that was barely on to begin with, off.

Caitlin has since deleted the awful photo, but not before the comments came rolling in. Reports claim, after Caitlin posted the photo, Greg Cimeno responded to comments about the image. “Anything for the laugh,” he declared. When one of Caitlin’s friends wrote that the photo was “Not too funny,” Greg replied, “Not too funny. It’s f*cking hilarious!!!” Greg, by far, was the most excited about his offensive choice.

He even used his Twitter account to announce that he was making the “best Halloween costume of the year:”

This isn’t Caitlin’s first time broadcasting racism on social media. Earlier this summer, the she posted a photo of an Black girl wearing a T-shirt reading “Black Girls Rock.” In her accompanying caption, Cimeno wrote, “First of all, sorry Hun but mommy lied to you & secondly if I was wearing a shirt that said something like the truth ‘white girls rock’ I would be stared at and called a racist cracker.”

And since these folks seem to think crime is so hilarious, check out what Gawker found out about Filene (the one dressed and painted as Trayvon):

He (Filene) was arrested in June for felony auto theft. His rap sheet also includes “collars for loitering / prowling” and failure to register an automobile. He took a plea deal for the auto theft charge in August and was sentenced to 18 months on probation.

Hilarious, isn’t it?

Every year, it seems we’re having the same conversation about blackface and Halloween. It’s an issue that has no solution because it’s just going to keep happening. What is it about painting a White face Black that is so alluring? What do you think? Let’s chat @Rhapsodani.
