Nas is widely considered as one of the most influential hip-hop artists of our time. In a recent op-ed piece on CNN, writer Eliott C. McLaughlin believes that the Queensbridge rapper is the greatest lyricist of all time.

In the article, McLaughlin argues that Nas is among rappers like Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Too $hort to name a few for his longevity and dexterity behind the mic. Even so, the debate has always been between Pac and Biggie. Nas also shares his thoughts on how they are still the best who have ever done it. He admits that he would be better if both were still around.

“I just think Biggie was something else. He was the Hitchcock of this thing, man. He told you a story. There was a seriousness that came with it that can’t compare with nothing,” he said.

He continued, “To leave us with that kind of music at that young age is exceptional. There’s no other word to say. They were bigger than all of us, even today — their music, their sound, their topics. The way the world listened to them was a lot bigger than I would even say myself and the rest of us … I don’t think today we’ve made an official impact that those guys were just starting to make.”

Although hip-hop heads are quick to formulate their own GOAT lists, Nas says it’s too early for him to be considered among history’s best MCs.

“It’s wayyyyyy, way, way too early in our lives,” he said. “It’s great to put a list together, but don’t take it too seriously because your list won’t matter 10 years from now or 15 years from now. It’ll be a different list.”
