Our favorite “it” girl, Ava DuVernay, was honored with four awards this year by the African-American Film Critics Association.
The writer/producer/director and co-founder of Hello Beautiful won the award for Best Music, Best Screenplay and Best Independent Film for “Middle of Nowhere.” Lead Actress Emayatzy Corinealdi also earned the award for Best Actress.
DuVernay is riding high on the success of her film. This year, she was awarded the Best Director Prize at the Sundance Film Festival making her the first woman of color to do so.
The AAFCA named “Zero Dark Thirty” a film about the 10-year-manhunt to find “Osama bin Laden” as this year’s Best Picture.

The association was founded in 2003 by Gil L. Robertson and Shawn Edwards who wanted to award films and film directors that catered to themes within the Black community.
Honorees will receive their awards Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 in Hollywood.
