Police have arrested the mother of a 6-month-old baby after they say they found the child covered from head to toe in feces and gagged with a used baby wipe in its mouth.
Michelle Charley of Albuquerque, New Mexico was arrested after police were called to her home when her other children failed to report to school.
When police arrived they made the shocking discovery, an infant left unattended whose entire body and eyes were caked with dried feces from a leaking diaper.
Furthermore police removed a wet wipe from the child’s mouth that was caked with feces before taking the baby into the bathroom and cleaning it rather than wait for more investigators to arrive.
Police say Charley called social workers at the children’s school and told them she was “too drunk” to pick them up and when they arrived at her home and saw that she wasn’t there they alerted police.
She was on the scene however when police arrived and extremely intoxicated on the bed with a man she says she met earlier at a gas station surrounded by scattered beer bottles.
The mother was booked on one count of child abuse Wednesday.
Police say this is not her first time being charged with abuse, once in 2005 and once in 2007 when police found her 2-year-old daughter outside of a police station after she wandered away from home.
