Dr. Maya Angelou Says ‘No More Black History Month?’

Author and activist Maya Angelou hopes for a time when Black History Month will no longer be needed to explain the contributions of African-Americans. “We want to reach a time when there won’t be Black History Month, when black history will be so integrated into American history that we study it along with every other history,” she said in an interview from her home in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Wednesday. “That’s the hope, and we have to continue to work until that is true, until that becomes a fact.”

In the meantime, she said, she will continue to put the history out there.

Angelou is hosting an hour-long syndicated radio special on the civil rights era that will air throughout this month on about 200 public radio stations across the country. Her special features Grammy award-winning singer Mary J. Blige, Democratic Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young, economist and Bennett College President Julianne Malveaux, and professor Nikky Finney, winner of the 2011 National Book Award for poetry.

Angelou, 83, said she hopes the program sends a message that “the work of making our country more than it is today” is unfinished.

Welcome to the February edition of Radio One Richmond’s “Campus Chronicles” – a brand new featured presentation starring your favorite personalities giving a voice to the students of local educational institutes and all things concerning the college lifestyle of 2012. Hide your wife kids, hide your wife! Antoine Dodson, who became an overnight sensation from the now infamous YouTube clip, is using his fame to launch his musical career. Dodson teams up with artist Brent Morgan for a track titled “Lovesick Lullaby.” Even though Dodson’s vocals seem to be assisted by Autotune, the song seems pretty decent.

It’s a brand new day for Viola Davis. The Oscar-nominated actress gives good face on the cover of this week’s L.A. Times Magazine–with a fierce ‘fro! In the interview Davis discusses her long climb to fame and success:

“That really is our plight, especially as women of color,” she says. “You can have all the training in the world, come from a respectable background and yet never get that big opportunity that breaks you out—never.”

Last night the actress/singer was caught on camera by TMZ having dinner with former boy toy Ray J at Le Petit Four restaurant in West Hollywood. After their meal, Ray J gallantly opened the passenger side door open for Whitney before driving away.

Denzel Washington Breaks Down Struggles of Blacks in Hollywood

In a sit-down interview with The Grio’s Chris Witherspoon, actor Denzel Washington shared his views on the invisible ceiling black actors and directors hit when it comes to funding black films.

“Tyler Perry can make movies up to a certain budget, and then he hits a ceiling….it’s more they (Hollywood) don’t want to take a chance. Because this town, black or white, they’re just bean counters. They’re just crunching the numbers.”

Washington, who just wrapped up filming Flight with director Robert Zemeckis (“Forrest Gump”), admits that Paramount Studios only gave the project a mere $32 million budget because of the movie’s somber subject matter–Denzel’s character is an alcoholic airline pilot.
