Brandy Talks State of R&B, Friendship with Kim Kardashian and Whitney Movie

You would assume that someone who had huge success as an R&B star more in line with the tradition of the genre might take issue with the Europop turn many of her contemporaries have taken. However, Brandy says when it comes to the pop and dance trends of R&B, “Music is free.” Meanwhile, speaking with The Boombox, Brandy also touched her on relationship with Kim Kardashian or lack thereof, as well as her thoughts on the rumored Whitney Houston biopic.

How do you feel about the shift in R&B, as more and more of the genre’s artists put out pop, house and dance-leaning music?

I think art is art. Music is music. We put things into categories, but if it makes you feel good, then you should support it. I think it’s great to be a versatile artist. I love that. Two Eleven is true to me. There’s something for everybody on this album. Music is free, there are no rules.

You were very close with Whitney. How do you feel about the talks about a biopic about her life and the rumors about who might portray her if the film were to come into fruition?

Honestly, I think it’s a little bit too soon to do a biopic of her life. Everybody needs to chill out right now. It’s way too soon to really tell the true story, but I was very close to Whitney, and it was always my dream to play her. While she was alive in the physical, I talked to her about it all the time. “Nobody else can play you but me! I gotta do it! Can you just sign off?” I would tell her that all the time and she would just laugh and say, “Girl, I’m too young to have a movie about me yet!” So that was our little joke, but if it’s meant to be, it will happen. If not, when it does happen I feel like it’s going to be great and people are going to be inspired, and I’m going to be first in line to buy a ticket and go see it.

You’re in Tyler Perry’s new movie “The Marriage Counselor,” as is your former friend Kim Kardashian. Your friendship kind of deteriorated after she started dating your brother Ray J, so what was it like making a movie with her now?

We were friends, yes, but I didn’t work with her! It was a bummer because I was hoping to see her and rekindle our friendship, but we didn’t have any scenes together. But that wasn’t on purpose! I read the script before I was hired for the movie and I could see her character and my character didn’t have any scenes together. But I’m sure she did great, and I’ll see her at the premiere and say hi.

John Legend Disses Britney Spears

John Legend isn’t excited about Britney Spears and Demi Lovato joining The X-Factor as judges. Legend, who himself will be taking part as a judge on the new ABC singing competition series, Duets, questioned the merits to which the Disney vets were awarded the coveted gigs. Speaking with E! News, the singer-songwriter said, ”You know it’s interesting. It should be very interesting. I don’t have much to say,” he said.

He then said after that: “It’s interesting when people you know who are judging singing competitions when they aren’t really singers. It’s interesting.”

Shady ~~queen~~, shady.

Meanwhile, his Duets co-stars, Kelly Clarkson and Robin Thicke were much kinder.

While the first American Idol champion said “you want to root for” Spears and Lovato, Robin Thicke said flatly: “Oh come on, everything Britney does, she excels at. Demi is a lovely young lady, and I’m sure they’ll do nothing but make the show a lot more fun to watch.” Obviously, those two remember their media training.

And if you’re wondering, yes Britney stans, John has heard from you. He tweeted: “Read my mentions today if you want some entertainment served with a side dish of crazy and a sprinkle of racism.” And: “I’ve never heard demi’s voice btw. Wasn’t referring to her.” Oops, y’all did it again. Shimmy.

The man who presided over Whitney Houston’s funeral was carjacked earlier today in Detroit. Pastor Marvin Winans told a reporter for WXYZ that he realized he was “not a good situation” when he noticed a group of four men. Those men ultimately jumped him, striped him of the cash he had on hand and drove away in his SUV.

Janet Jackson and boy-toy Wissam Al Mana jetted out to Paris to celebrate the pop icon’s birthday! Janet posted a picture of her and her long-time boyfriend with the caption “Spending my bday w/my baby,” on her Facebook page, which was overwhelmed with greetings from her fans.

The NutriSystem spokes model is also working on her eleventh album which does not have a release date yet. In an interview with ThatGrapeJuice “Well, I’ll be working! Basically what I’m doing now; starting the process of getting the songs, of getting everything together for the album.”

Breaking News: “The Godfather Of Go Go” Chuck Brown Dies At Age 75

According to sources in Washington D.C., The Godfather of Go Go has passed away at the age of 75.

Brown’s musical career began in the 1960s playing guitar with Jerry Butler and The Earls of Rhythm, joining Los Latinos in 1965. He still performs music today and is commonly known in the Washington, DC area. Brown’s early hits include “I Need Some Money” and “Bustin’ Loose”. “Bustin’ Loose” has been adopted by the Washington Nationals baseball team as its home run celebration song, and was interpolated by Nelly for his 2002 number one hit “Hot In Herre.” Brown also recorded go-go covers of early jazz and blues songs, such as “Go-Go Swing”, “Run Joe”, and “Stormy Monday”.

White femcee Iggy Azalea announced, earlier this year, that she had signed a deal with Interscope Records but that has proven to be false. While on MTV’s “Hip-Hop POV,” Grand Hustle boss–T.I.– told Bu Thiam, VP of A&R at Def Jam, that Iggy is a “free agent.”

Iggy is in talks with other labels including Def Jam, reports Rap-Up. Her EP Glory will be released later this month, featuring artists such as Big Sean and Mike Posner.

Jimmy Henchmen Trial Spotlights Hip Hop/Cocaine Connection

The trial of Jimmy Henchmen, former manager of stars like Akon and The Game, has begun in Brooklyn, N.Y. with prosecuters accusing him of running a multi-state drug operation.

Prosecutors stated that Rosemond’s Czar Entertainment company served a dual function of both managing music artists and doubling as a front to launder his drug operation’s cash. Assistant Prosecutor Una Dean said, “For a time business was good. He had a lot of money and lived a life of luxury. But he didn’t just have money; he had cash, so he could continue to build his drug empire.”

Basketball Wives star Royce Reed may be tiny, but she doesn’t fold under pressure that easily.

Reed has recently been going through very public relationship woes. Her boyfriend Tampa Bay Buccaneer Dezmon Briscoe was caught sexting his baby’s mother behind Royce’s back. Briscoe’s baby mother put Dezmon and Royce on blast via Twitter by spilling secret text conversations between them. Though many insisted Royce leave him, Royce refuses.

Forbes has released their annual “World’s Most Powerful Celebrities” list and Jennifer Lopez reigns supreme on top! Out of 100 superstars, Beyonce ranks at 16, while hubby Jay-Z follows behind at 38.

Oprah who is number two on the list, earned $165 million, placing her at the top of the list for highest earned celebrities! While Hov and Bey made close to $100 million combined, Rihanna claimed the number four spot overall, with a social rank of two!
