Did you know that 1 in 3 children in the United States faces a future with diabetes?
The American Diabetes Association works everyday to change the frightening future that diabetes has in store, but we need your help. Together we can stop diabetes. Take the first step today by registering to walk in our local Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes event.
Every step you take and every dollar you raise helps the American Diabetes Association provide education programs in our community, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure. Once you register, use our online fundraising tools to create your personal web page, email your friends, family and co-workers, accept online donations and raise more money to stop diabetes.
It’s more fun to Step Out together! Gather your friends, family and co-workers and form a Step Out team! It’s a great way to do good together and share in a fun and healthy community experience. Teams come in all sizes—two or more people make a team! Corporations, friends & family, clubs & organizations and school groups build teams to walk for those who have been touched by diabetes. Get started today by selecting “Form a Team!”
When you walk, you help us stop diabetes. Walking is one of the easiest, most relaxing forms of exercise for many people, but especially for those living with diabetes. By participating in Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes, you can get fit, reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes and support the American Diabetes Association!

Dine Out for Diabetes at California Pizza Kitchen on Tuesday, October 12th from 10am-11pm for lunch, dinner or take-out. A portion of your table’s food sales benefit the American Diabetes Association. Make sure to bring this coupon (opens in a new window) for your purchase to count!
Online Fundraising Help: Did you know that people who fundraise online raise 4x more than those who don’t? Haven’t tried using our online tools before, or need help with our new Participant Center? Denim for Diabetes. Want to spread the word about diabetes and potentially save the lives of the 5.7 million Americans who
don’t even know they have diabetes? Have a Denim for Diabetes Day at your work, school, or other organization. For a $5 donation, people can wear jeans to work on a day chosen by your company. Each participant will receive an official Denim for Diabetes sticker, ambassador card, and type 2 diabetes risk test. For more information on Denim for Diabetes, click here. Central Virginia Diabetes Support Group – If you or a family member has type 1 or type 2 diabetes or have been affected by
diabetes, you are invited to become part of this growing group. This Group focuses on topics related to diabetes management by providing interactive learning and a supportive environment. The Support Group meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 6:00 – 7:30 PM at St. Mary’s Hospital. For more information and a full list of topics, click here.
Event Details
Join us on a beautiful Fall Saturday morning, as we walk down Richmond’s own Monument Avenue. Enjoy the scenery of historic homes and a wide variety of foliage in striking fall colors. In addition, you will be raising money to help find a cure and stop diabetes. Grab your family, friends and co-workers, lace up your walking shoes and join us for a fun-filled and meaningful morning!
Beginning in Monroe Park, you will have the opportunity to visit our Wellness Village, play in our Kid Zone and enjoy some lively entertainment. Then you will stroll up spectacular Monument Avenue, the only street in the United States that is a National Historic Landmark. Along the route you’ll pass the J.E.B. Stuart Monument, the Robert E. Lee Monument and Jefferson Davis Monument, before reaching the “Stonewall” Jackson Monument at Boulevard.
Form a team or register as an individual walker. Either way, we are sure you’ll have fun! The money you raise will help fund education for patients and their families; advocacy efforts; and important research designed to find a cure for this potentially life threatening disease. Please join us in helping the 1.9 million Virginians battling diabetes and pre-diabetes every day.
A light lunch will be provided for participants raising $25 or more.
The American Diabetes Association Welcomes Back Diane Walker, from Fox News at Ten, as Our 2010 Emcee!
Diane Walker grew up in Richmond and is a product of Richmond Public Schools, graduating from Armstrong High in Church Hill. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she majored in English and Speech Communications.
She’s co-anchored Richmond’s first and only, hour-long, prime time Newscast for more than a decade. Helping WRLH, FOX News at Ten become Richmond’s First Choice for Late News.
Diane has been recognized for “Outstanding Effort by an Individual Reporter” by the Associated Press (AP) and she’s a repeat recipient of the “Douglas Southhall Freeman” award for Community Service, the highest honor the AP offers to an individual journalist, was awarded to Diane April 2010.
Also this year, Diane won honors from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters, June 2010, for outstanding coverage of a human interest, feature story which resulted in a life saving transplant for a child.

Parking: Parking is available in the VCU West Main St Deck on the corner of Main and Laurel streets. The only entrance open on Saturday is on Laurel Street. We will have signs directing traffic.
