At issue, the state’s proposed budget by Governor Bob McDonnell for FY-13 through FY-14; Virginia’s Retirement System, Education cuts vs increases; Health insurance benefits affordability; unemployment benefits extensions; economic development and restorative justice, to name a few.

What are the chief responsibilities of the Virginia General Assembly? To represent citizens in the formulation of public policy, enact laws of the Commonwealth, approve the budget, levy taxes, elect judges and confirm appointments by the Governor.

Richmond, VA – The city’s Cold Weather Overflow Shelter will open tonight, January 5, as overnight temperatures are forecasted to remain at or below 35 degrees. The shelter is located at Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, 14 West Duval Street. The shelter opens at 7 p.m. tonight and will close tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. Food will not be provided and pets are not allowed.

Residents in need of overnight shelter are asked to report to Commonwealth Catholic Charities Central Intake by 5 p.m. each day for a comprehensive intake and referral to the appropriate shelter. Commonwealth Catholic Charities Central Intake is located at the Freedom House Conrad Center, 1400 Oliver Hill Way, next to Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and Richmond City Jail. A referral to the Cold Weather Overflow Shelter will be provided to individuals who are not eligible for an existing shelter or if all available beds have been filled.

The Freedom House Conrad Center will continue to serve as a Day Warming Shelter through March 31, 2012.  The Conrad Center is located at 1400 Oliver Hill Way. Operating hours are from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. and clients will be provided breakfast, lunch and dinner. For more information, call Executive Director Mleba Gibbs at (804) 233-4064 ext. 205.

The city’s Department of Social Services (DSS) will accept Crisis Assistance applications now through March 15, 2012 at 900 East Marshall Street, Monday through Friday; from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents can also call the Fuel Line at (804) 646-7046. DSS also provides emergency assistance with gas and electric disconnection notices for residents who qualify.

Elderly or disabled residents can also contact Senior Connections for assistance at (804) 343-3000, Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ladies we take care of family, home, job, vehicle and every other thing better than we take care of ourselves. We need to start today ‘prioritize’ our lives. It starts with meditation and believing that your life and health are tools to be around effectively for your family and others.

Life happens and is often times unexpected but we must press on. God has entrusted us with a seed to grow his universe and we can’t do that if we are tired, weary, stressed, pressed and such a mess.

The women’s forum inspires me to do better and most importantly take of me for me and then my family. Some of the topics this year will include your health, finances, life insurance/wills, relationsips, education, small business, domestic violence and more.

Let’s prioritize ladies!

The women’s forum will be held at the Trinity Family Life Center 3601 Dill Road in Richmond, VA. This is a free event.

“Miss Community” Clovia kicked off her 4th annual Mens Forum Saturday June 25 at Trinity Life Center. Her goal was to assist with the repair of African American families, households, and communities. This year panelist included a list of very phenomenal men, such as former Governor & U.S. Senate Candidate Tim Kaine, U.S. Congressman Bobby Scott, Rodney White of Prison to Praise, King Tutt, Thomas Haynesworth of Freedom to Forgiveness, and Sean Anthony just to name a few. They intrigued the audience with their stories, advice, and encouraging words. As a result many were touched.

The CarMax Foundation has awarded a grant of $155,000 to the Enrichmond Foundation for use by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities to build a new basketball court, restore an existing building for use as a concession facility, and expand league play to include more Richmond youth and a new wheelchair league. This is the firth year that CarMax has supported youth basketball in the city. Since 2007, the CarMax Foundation has given more than $500,000 to restore and expand the department’s basketball courts at Pine Camp and fund league play for hundreds of Richmond youth between the ages of 10 and 17.

Guest speakers include; Richmond Chief Administrative Officer Byron Marshall, CarMax President and CEO Tom Folliard, CarMax Foundation President Lynn Mussatt, Richmond Director of Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities Dr. Norman C. Merrifield. Other City and CarMax Officials and Youth Basketball Teams and Radio One’s “Miss Community” Clovia Lawrence.
