Disclaimer: I am a dj. I am not a writer. I am not a theater major. I don’t have any expertise in the film industry. What I do have is an opinion, as I watch movies and drink martinis. Here are my thoughts…

in theaters: June 11th

Rating: 3 martinis

I missed the screening earlier this week, and when I did I realized that I was looking forward to this movie. So I went last night to the midnight screening. The theater was reasonably filled, which means I am not the only one. Now, please understand I’m more of a romantic comedy type–of-girl but I can stand an occasional thing blowing up once and a while. My quota has been filled, and well I may add.

I don’t remember the television show in detail so those loyal to the show, chime in. I kept watching Mr. T’s character for authenticity (that may not have been the right move), since I remember Mr. T but not his character’s name. I was too young back then to be caught up in the nostalgia of this movie, but it was good nonetheless.

This movie is action packed. The gunfight scenes were well executed and impressive. This movie even tried to entertain the intelligent (I really like those), but notice I said tried. All in all, A-team is a good compromise for a couple, and a great guy’s movie. The type of guy’s movie, a girl can stand to watch.

Go see the movie; it’s pretty decent for remake of a television show.

I watched the original last week, so I went into this ready to compare. I am proud of Will and Jada Pickett-Smith. The dynamic duo’s company produced this film and the star of the movie. I was impressed by both the movie and their offspring. Jaden Smith’s swagger is undeniable and so is his spitting image of his father. When I wasn’t distracted by that fact, I was definitely enjoying the movie.

My rating system is based purely off of emotion. I am no expert, nor do I care to be. I am giving my opinion, and it’s that simple. To be honest, I have been going through it lately and been giving myself an annoying pity party for a minute. This movie was my unexpected wake up call. Really!!??? The Karate kid!!??? Yuuurrrp *in my best Trey Songs voice*.

“Being still and doing nothing are two different things’ said Jackie Chan’s character. That alone hit me, but it wasn’t the only sage advice available. This movie is all about the struggle of getting up when life knocks you down… over, over, over and over again. I was reminded of a very important lesson, one that I can’t afford to forget. I was inspired. I was motivated, once again, to fight with purpose. To stay focused, and get up….EVERY TIME I get knocked down.

When a movie does that, it deserves the applause during the viewing. When it does that…it can be called a great movie (especially with the garbage Hollywood has been spewing out lately). When a movie does that…it deserves 4 martinis. When a movie makes you feel, it’s worth the money.

Go see it! It’s not the original, but it’s pretty close and pretty damn good.

The Cynn-ema Reviews, Get Him To The Greek

After having to watch Marmaduke, I almost lost hope this week. I have to admit, I expected worse. This movie was great! Diddy actually did a good job, but playing devil’s advocate…he just played himself. When Diddy steps outside of his box and performs well, then I will cheer and shout.

Russell Brand was extremely funny and the story line was decent. The humor of the movie was often disgusting but it was very funny. I laughed a great deal. The funniest part of the movie was the soundtrack. Listen to the words of the rock star that Russell Brand’s character plays, the word hilarious does the skits injustice.

The movie flows wells, the characters are played well, and this time the trailer does not represent the movie at all. The trailer was funny. The movie was funnier. In addition to being funny, it was a bit insightful. Not Confucius, but insightful nonetheless.

Get him to the Greek made me actually laugh out loud, and trust- that’s not easy. Go see the movie. It’s worth your money this weekend. Trust.

I’m so over the dragging of childhood memories onto the big screen. EVERYTHING doesn’t need to be a movie, especially this cute quirky cartoon strip about a talking dog. I don’t know what was most insulting; watching several dogs with their mouths moving for two hours or the life lessons shoved down my throat via the over the top sentiment. I recall thinking several times “Am I actually sitting here through this?” This was no Marley and Me.

I think my breaking point was the nostalgic ‘Old Yella’ moment. This is definitely not a kid movie, which makes it all the more insulting. Really!!!???? You expect me to be excited about watching an entire movie about a dog’s life trials and tribulations? Really? AND if so, you could at least make me feel like less of an idiot while I’m doing it!!!

Not to completely bash the movie-It had a few bright spots. There was occasional adult humor, and some cute moments. There, not completely bitter.

Anyhoo, wait for the video. If during the week that it’s released you have other options, wait for cable. (wow, this was my first bad review *applause please*)

Yesterday I went to the Moet & Chandon’s screening of Sex in the City. As I mingled with the city’s sexy folks and drank Carrie influenced champagne drinks, I grew ϋber excited.

Yet, I am sad to report, it wasn’t what I expected. I have never sat with Carrie and contemplated the duration of our experience. The movie dragged, and I got up at least two times to refill my champagne flute (Shouts to Moet for the bubbly- the lush in me needed to repeat that). Sex and the City always had my undivided attention. Something was not right.

It wasn’t the fashion, it was phenomenal as usual. It was breath taking to see all of that couture, and even more impressive against such a beautiful backdrop in the Middle East. It wasn’t the friendship; I always enjoyed the banter between friends. So I sat in my seat trying to figure out what it was.

Then it hit me, it was the story line. Carrie is no longer single. She is a “Mrs.”…all grown up, and I’m not there yet (that’s my personal take on my detachment). Aside from my couch issues; the truth is- it took way too long to get to the point. Don’t get me wrong, it’s Sex in the City all day. The fashion, the pretty men, and the glamour; it’s all there. It just takes a few too many scenes to get to what you really want to see.

Trust me, you will still enjoy it. You still need to see it, if for no other reason but the fashion. Man oh man, and you NEED to see the fashion. I hear there will be another, meaning part 3 and even though this experience wasn’t like the first. I will go again, for the third time. Hey, sue me, I drank the Kool-Aid and love it. So, it is what it is.

Nas and Kelis Now Officially Divorced

Rap legend Nas and R&B star Kelis are officially no more, as a California judge finalized the couple’s divorce on Friday.

Though the two are no longer married, many issues in the ugly divorce remain unsettled, including the custody rights to the couple’s son and the spousal support Nas may have to pay his ex-wife.

The couple had been married since 2005, and started dating two years before they tied the knot. Kelis filed for divorce last year, citing irreconcilable differences.

Nas, though, has been vocal about his anger during the divorce proceeding, claiming that Kelis prevented him from seeing their son, Knight, in July of last year, shortly after he was born and just as the divorce process began.

RATING: 3 Martinis and an empty glass (almost a 3.5)

First off, I was pissed because I was missed Grey Anatomy’s season finale to review this movie. I LOVE GREY’S ANATOMY!!!!!!!

Now with that said, this movie was much better then I expected. I was not looking forward to watching this flick, but it ‘had me at hello’. (That was a movie reference for my non-movie buffs….it’s from Jerry McGuire) MacGruber, was actually very funny.

It was highly inappropriate entertainment, but funny- very funny. I am not a huge SNL fan so I cannot accurately compare the movie to the well-known skit. I don’t know what the die-hard fans will feel about the movie, but what I can tell you is that I laughed the entire time. I also said ‘wow’ out loud at least ten times. Wow, because the jokes and comedic moments were over the top and will most definitely be offensive to some.

I gave the movie and empty glass because I had to deduct some points due to the offensive humor. It was humor, nonetheless. If you like spoof-type flicks, you will most definitely like this movie.

It surprised me, me who didn’t want to go. Me, who missed the FINALE of her all time FAVORITE show! Me, who will say….I misjudged, this was a decent movie. Go see it, you will definitely laugh.

RATING: 3.5 Martinis out of 4

Now this was right up my alley. It was a romantic comedy that made me laugh, cry and feel. It was set in Verona, Italy; the scenery alone should be rated. This movie was beautiful and only effective if you are a hopeless romantic.

A fifty-year old letter is found, addressed to a love columnists in Verona. When the character Sophie answers the letter by love circumstance of her own, an amazing journey begins.

Now to some this may sound far-fetched and too mushy. This movie could have had disastrous effects, if it hadn’t been done exactly this way. It was great!

It’s a tale of a fifty-year old regret. It is a story about an old love lost and new one discovered. It’s about finding yourself and the true one who loves you. But most of all it’s about a young girl with very simple yet profound view of love.

If you are hopeful toward love and romance, this is the movie for you to see this summer.

RATING: 3.5 Martini Glasses out of 4

Just Wright was just in time. This was a story that needed to be told, though classically unrealistic it was a great to watch. Common has more growing to do as an actor but he carried the character well. Latifah lit up the screen, with her contagious smile, and she has much to smile about. It was her business savvy that brought this feel good movie to the screen. So, she holds the title actor and producer, and that made me smile.

Just Wright is the typical rag to riches story with a twist, a much-needed message; know your worth, and except nothing less. It is a great story and a great message in the middle of Hollywood’s cartoon, vampire and murder movies.

It was a pleasure to experience. Common actually made me believe he could ball, but he cheated a bit. He grew up around basketball all his life. In addition to having a love of the game, his father played in the ABA…it’s genetics!

Go see the movie; it won’t be a waste of your money.
