Gloria Naylor, the acclaimed author who penned The Women of Brewster Place, died of heart failure near her home in the Virgin Islands on September 28. She was 66 years old. Critics praised Naylor’s debut novel, which won her the prestigious National Book Award and the American Book Award in 1983. Brewster Place was later turned into a two-part TV movie, helmed by Oprah Winfrey in 1989. Hurricane Matthew Slams Into Haiti

Hurricane Matthew, a Category 4 hurricane, made landfall on the Caribbean Island of Haiti on Tuesday, bringing heavy rain and threatening the island’s towns and villages. At around 7 a.m., winds measured 145 mph. The hurricane is the first major storm to hit the island in the last 50 years. Matthew is expected to travel north toward Cuba later Tuesday into Wednesday. Residents are actively searching for shelter in rural areas. Haiti is still in rehabilitation from a deadly 7.0 earthquake that ravaged the island in January 2010. Read more.


Pennsylvania College Suspends Two Students Over Racist Blackface Video

Two students at Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania face disciplinary action for a racist video posted to Snapchat. In the video, a White female student in blackface sporting an Albright T-shirt, complains about the Black Lives Matter movement. Albright College president Lex McMillan III said the two suspended students were the most involved in creating and distributing the video. However, “multiple students of multiple races were involved,” he said in a statement issued Friday. Read more.


Pennsylvania City Council Censures Mayor For Racist Barack Obama Memes

The West York Borough Council on Monday censured Mayor Charles Wasko for his continued racist posts aimed at President Barack Obama. One post showed a group of orangutans in a wheelbarrow with the caption, “Aww … moving day at the Whitehouse has finally arrived.” Another, which was later deleted, displayed a picture of actor Clint Eastwood from a scene in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly next to a noose. “Barry, this rope is for you,” the caption says, referring to President Obama “You wanna bring that empty chair over here!” Several petitions and public calls for Wasko’s resignation have been ignored; he refuses to step down. Read more.
