Group offers seminar on weapons safety at home after accidental shootings by Detroit children

Parents can learn how to properly store firearms in homes where children are present as part of a gun safety seminar. The three-hour program is scheduled Saturday by Legally Armed Detroit, a firearms training and gun rights advocacy organization.

Firearms instructor Rick Ector says the event will educate parents on how to “lawfully and responsibly own firearms while keeping their children safe from harm.”

It was created after several shootings of children by improperly stored guns, including the Nov. 8 death of a 9-year-old Detroit boy who accidentally shot himself while playing with a weapon he found inside his home. Seminar participation will be capped at 60 people. The first 50 will receive free gun cable locks. Parents are encouraged to also register a child.

Lions beat Bears 34-17 on Thanksgiving

The Detroit Lions defeated the Chicago Bears 34-17 Thursday in the team’s annual Thanksgiving Day game. Detroit is now 35-37-2 on Thanksgiving and improved to 8-4 on the season.

After a slow start by the home team, Chicago jumped out to an early lead but the Lions quickly turned in around taking the lead in the second quarter and never looked back.

Quarterback Matt Stafford lead the way, completing 34 of 45 passed for 390 yards and two touchdowns. Calvin Johnson caught 11 of Stafford’s passes, including both touchdowns, for 146 yards. Running back Joique Bell also rushed for two touchdowns and 91 yards.

The victory snaps a two game losing streak after road losses to Arizona and New England. Now the Lions look to go 9-4 a week from Sunday with a home game against the 2-9 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Black Friday snow

It’s a big shopping day with some afternoon trouble on the way. Happy Black Friday! We’ll have very cool temps early with wind chills down in the teens (flirting with single digits) and just a few flurries. You’ll see some sunshine midday with highs only hitting near 30 degrees and winds SSW 5-12 mph. An Alberta Clipper will bring snow through the mid to late afternoon. Model information is not completely consistent with start times and amounts. But, expect light to moderate snow after two or three o’clock. Snow will be anywhere between a half inch and two inches over the area. Be careful as streets will likely get snow covered for a while into the early evening.

The weekend is warming nicely! But, we’ll see a few flakes and some drizzle on and off early Saturday as temps are slowly rising Saturday Morning. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a few areas of afternoon drizzle and highs climbing eventually into the low 40s through the late afternoon and evening.

Sunday will be into the low 50s for high temps! But, we’ll see a few light rain showers coming and going. Either way, not a terrible weekend to get those holiday decorations out.
