Detroit reacts to Obama’s immigration speech

According to Local 4, President Barack Obama’s executive action speech on immigration was given a huge round of applause from folks in southwest Detroit.

“What the president has said is very overwhelming,” said Jorge Garcia, who could be deported any day.

Garcia wakes up every morning fearing that this could be the day he’s forced to leave.

“It’s stressful knowing that any time they can come and pick me up,” he said.

“I’m concerned for people in our situation because (my husband isn’t) here and I can’t help but to be concerned we might get lost,” said Margaret Gonzales, whose husband was deported.

That’s why Obama’s plan on immigration reform means so much to them. It gives protection for 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation, giving the Garcias a glimpse of hope.

“These people don’t have to live in the shadows,” said Raquel Garcia Anderson, with Michigan United. “They can go get a driver’s license, so when a police officer pulls you over you have some type of ID.

Monroe County woman who faked her disappearance avoids jail time

Detroit woman helps heal homeless children, mothers

There are nearly 80,000 homeless children in Michigan, and many of them never receive medical care because homeless parents are afraid.

Peggy Richardson is the medical director of our SAY Detroit Family Health Clinic, the nation’s first clinic devoted to homeless children and their mothers. Richardson had a full-time practice of her own when the clinic opened six years ago. The clinic saw more than 6,000 patients last year. It’s grown from just handling emergencies to preventive and overall health.

Richardson was inspired to work at the clinic based on her own Detroit experience. Today Richardson is more than a doctor — she is an inspirational figure to volunteers, staffers and patients. From the streets of Detroit to helping those that are still living on them, Peggy Richardson is a major healer in the heart of Detroit.

NFL Moves Jets-Bills Game To Detroit On Monday Night

Snowed out in Buffalo, the Bills are heading to Detroit to play their “home” game against the New York Jets on Monday night. The NFL announced the location and date of the game on Thursday night after a severe lake-effect storm paralyzed much of the Buffalo region. More than 5 feet of snow has fallen in the Buffalo area since Monday, and another 1 to 3 feet was projected to fall by Friday.

The storm forced the Bills to cancel their past two days of practice because of impassable roads and driving bans in Orchard Park and many communities neighboring Ralph Wilson Stadium. The team intends to travel to Detroit on Friday and practice at the Lions’ facility. The Lions are at New England on Sunday.

This marks the second time the Bills will play at Ford Field this season following a 17-14 win over the Lions on Oct. 5.
