Child killed, 4 others wounded in ‘gang-involved’ Detroit shooting

A toddler was killed and four others wounded in a shooting on Detroit’s east side Thursday. The girl, 3 years old, was fatally shot in what Police Chief James Craig called “gang involved.” Chief Craig said gang members are believed to be responsible in the shooting at Hayes and Mogul, north of Outer Drive.

Fox 2 reports that the aunt of the child is Amiracle Williams. She said that both of the girls’ parents are among those wounded. Williams’ father, 40, and mother, 36, are recovering at an area hospital. Her father is in critical condition. Her mother is expected to recover, the aunt said. At least one of the shooting victims is in critical condition. The other four wounded are all adults, police say.

According to police, an altercation happened outside nearby Detroit Denby High School, where one person was wounded before the parties involved went to Hayes and Mogul. Four others were shot at the second location.

Craig added that police are looking at social media for the origin of the dispute. Police are focusing on six suspects including four females and two males. Two suspects, a male and female are in custody, as well as one vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Detroit Police Department at (313) 596-5300.

Local man loses daughter, grandson to Ebola outbreak

Emmanuel Massaley, 40, is mourning the loss of his Liberian family members from Farmington Hills, Michigan. His daughter Delphin was 20 years old when she died Tuesday from the virus. Massaley remembers the last time he talked to her, the morning before she died. He said her spirits were high. But Ebola didn’t just take her life, it also killed Massaley’s grandson and namesake, Emmanuel, who was just 2 years old.

Massaley tells Action News his village in Liberia has been decimated by the virus, killing 18 of 67 people so far. Massaley came to America in 2011, following his mother who came to Detroit in 1997. He came not to escape Ebola, but for a better life. Ebola didn’t hit Liberia until March of this year, and according to the Centers for Disease Control, 45,000 have died of Ebola in Liberia and neighboring Sierra Leone and Guinea since. Ebola wasn’t a concern the last time Massaleyvisited his African home in 2012.

The news of the virus hitting the U.S. has only intensified Massaley’s grieving. He had hopes his loved ones would be spared, but he’s lost not only his daughter and her son, but his daughter’s mother and her son. His father and aunt remain in Liberia as does extended family. He hopes the United States can help.

Delta flight delayed from Detroit Metro Airport after passenger feels sick

A sick passenger on Delta Flight 98 leaving Detroit bound for Paris delayed the flight for more than an hour and brought out the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and EMTs to Detroit Metro Airport Thursday. Passengers said they were told multiple stories of what the delay was.

Passengers were told to stand by while the sick passenger was removed from the plane and the hazmat suits were brought out. Passengers on the plane told Local 4 it was a pregnant woman who was removed and taken to Oakwood Hospital for treatment. Delta said the all-clear was given for the plane to take off and that medical personnel on site determined Ebola was not a possibility. The CDC said they do not have an active report about a person in Detroit of concern.
