Melissa McCarthy has accomplished what very few plus-size actresses in Hollywood have been able to – make it as a successful A-list actress on both the small and big screen. Audiences first came to love the talented comedienne as Sookie St. James on the CW hit dramedy “Gilmore Girls” and is now helming her own sitcom with “Mike and Molly” on CBS.

McCarthy’s also enjoying a winning streak on the big screen; her hilarious antics on “Bridesmaids” earned her an Oscar nod and last summer’s buddy cop movie “The Heat” (so-starring Sandra Bullock) was one of the top grossing comedies of 2013.  In her latest project, MCarthy stars as a down-on-her-luck fast food worker who decides to hit the road with her eccentric grandmother (Susan Sarandon) in “Tammy.”

McCarthy success proves you don’t have to box yourself – looks or talent-wise – to succeed in Tinseltown. We’ve listed three reasons she stays winning in this cut-throat business:

1.  She’s doesn’t care what you think about her body

In an industry that frowns upon body diversity, McCarthy is adamant in not succumbing to the pressure of being rail thin.  In a recent interview with People Magazine, she states: “My weight? It is what it is. Like most people I know, you gain a little, you lose a little. ”  She’s also found support in fellow plus-sized actress/ comedienne Rebel Wilson (“Pitch Perfect”) and the two friends have vowed not to jump on the skinny bandwagon.

2.  She’s downright hilarious

One of the keys to McCarthy’s success is the ability to “go there” with whichever character she plays.  From her outrageous post-credit sex tape scene involving lunch meat in “Bridesmaids” to her but gusting guest gigs on “Saturday Night Live,”  McCarthy puts all vanity aside to hit your funny bone:

3. She knows what’s really important in life

McCarthy’s been married to fellow actor Ben Falcone since 2005 andhas two two children – Viv, 5 and Georgie, 4.  Of her family life, McCarthy says: “Once I got married and had kids….everything changed.  In my head the checklist became ‘Are the girls ok? Is Ben ok? Fine.  Then I have nothing to worry about. “

“Tammy” is in theaters nationwide.
