Conspiracy, Manufacturing or Simple possession of marijuana that is the question: The Charlottesville City Council is supporting a resolution calling on the state to take another look at its policies concerning marijuana. Some members on council are concerned if a broader resolution which defined marijuana possession as a low priority for police would give the wrong message to youths.
In the Commonwealth of Virginia, marijuana possession is a felony offense punishable by jail time, fines, probation and lost of voter rights. A simple possession penalty is considered a non-violent offense according to the Secretary of the Commonwealth. Marijuana with the intent to distribute or manufacture is considered a violent offense. The Charlottesville City Council voted in favor of calling on the Virginia General Assembly and Governor Bob McDonnell to revisit the sentencing guidelines for marijuana penalties.
