Famed actress/singer Jennifer Hudson was the first to take the stand in the triple murder trial of William Balfour, the man who has been accused of killing her mother, brother and nephew. The trial began today in a Chicago courtroom where Hudson’s testimony has already taken place revealing just how emotional the entire situation has been for her since the day she received the phone call about the devastating tragedy.
Inside the courtroom, Hudson identified Balfour and stated how the close knit family never liked Balfour because of the way he treated her sister Julia. Hudson also spoke of the times she encouraged her sister not to marry him. “Where he was, I tried not to be,” Hudson said.
The tragedy also reportedly came after Balfour’s deadly threats and warnings to his wife Julia including one startling comment on her birthday (the day before the killings) where Balfour was quoted as saying “If you ever leave me, I’m going to kill you, but I’m going to kill your family first.”
Balfour has plead not guilty of the charges. If convicted and found guilty of at least two of the three murders, he will face a mandatory life sentence. A judge says the trail could take up to four weeks while Hudson says she plans to be there for every single day of testimony in the case.
